Therapy Dogs and Animal Assisted Therapy
Animal assisted therapy (AAT) is the use of certified therapy animals as a part of a therapeutic plan. Animal assisted therapy is a significant part of treatment for many people who are physically, socially, emotionally or cognitively challenged. Those in hospitals or nursing homes often benefit from AAT, especially children and the elderly. While animals such as horses and cats can make excellent therapy animals,…

I am a dog. I am a living, breathing animal. I feel pain, joy, love, fear and pleasure. I am not a thing. If I am hit, I will bruise, I will bleed, I will break.
I enjoy playtime, walk time, but more than anything I enjoy time with you. I want nothing more than to be by your side. I want to sleep where you sleep and walk where you walk.
I feel love. I crave companionship. I enjoy the touch of a kind hand and the softness of a good bed. I want to be inside with my family,…

Please click on the link below, and you will find a website with a petition to Gov. Steve Brasher. This petition is to hold all the animal shelters in the state of Kentucky accountable to Kentucky government.
This is a long overdue action. I read about so much abuse and neglect going on in various areas of Kentucky, in shelters of all places where these helpless animals should be protected.
If you feel strongly like I do about it, click on the link below and…

When a dog starts scratching and can’t seem to stop, everyone in the house suffers. Chronic itching is all too often either trivialized or misdiagnosed. And that’s too bad because there are solutions out there.
First and foremost, owners of itchy pets need to understand that not all dogs that scratch suffer from “mange.” This catchall phrase ignores the fact that there are in fact multiple causes for a dog to scratch, some of which occur simultaneously.
Once a veterinarian…

Dear Fellow Pet Lovers, We are a faculty family and have a leave of absence this coming school year. We will be living overseas during this time and cannot take our four wonderful cats. We are seeking someone who would be willing to care for them in their own home(s). Although ideally they could stay together, we are open to splitting them and sending them to separate homes. Although not a tremendous amount, compensation will be offered in addition to food and supplies. They are healthy and…

Our rescue has been temporarily shut down because of one neighbor and a couple of their friends complaining about our rescue dogs. We now have 57 days to move 17 dogs from our home. If these dogs don't find another place to go the local animal control is going to take them.
So we are needing someone to adopt these babies or find a another rescue to take them. Then we are going to need to build an indoor/outdoor sound proof facility in order to…

Well, we survived the
storm that hit the
midwest. We still do not have electricity. Sydney and Addy definitely thought it was weird when we were getting ready this morning in the dark.
As I have written in previous blogs
here and…

I have a confession to make - the girls eat poop. Now, I don't feel too bad about this because apparently, this is a very common problem. The official term for dogs eating poop is
coprophagia. I
googled 'dog eats poop' and came up with a variety of sources. My favorite
site lists 20 reasons why dogs participate in…

Thank goodness for the rain today. My yard & garden desperately need the rain. It is great to feel the cool weather that the rain is bringing in too.
Sydney does not like the rain. She will
not go out in it at all. I suspect she some how associates rain with thunder. As you might
remember, Sydney does not like…

We have a dartboard downstairs in our entertainment/fun room/man cave area. We marked it off with a strip of tape so all the boys would be know where to stand. We had to do this because of all the 'heated debates' we were having about the dartboard and where to stand.
We have had the dartboard well before Sydney. So the tape had been down on the carpet for awhile. Therefore, it was a
complete surprise when we found Sydney chewing on the tape. Of course, we scolded her but we…

When we first got Sydney, I was a running hobbyist. I would never use the terms 'I am a runner'. But I have run several road races and use running as a way to get in shape. I had seen several runners running with their dogs and it always looked so peaceful.

Once I got Sydney, I wanted to make her into a 'running dog'. We started off pretty early. I would put her on leash and we would take off....meaning she was pulling me rather…

Addy is a talker. What I mean by that is she lets you know her emotions by whining, barking, moaning, huffing, growling and so on. When she is hungry, she will do a combination between a growl, howl and moan. If she wants to get your attention, she whines. If she
really wants your attention, she barks. When she is contented, she almost purrs like a cat.
All of these we have come to know and expect out of her. However, if Addy has taught us one thing, it is to expect the…

The girls love this break in the weather. They both have had a lot of energy and keep getting up earlier and earlier in the morning (today it was 6 am).
When I asked the girls if they wanted to go walking tonight, needless to say they both freaked out. Sydney starts whining and Addy does her 'walk around'. Addy will walk circles around me until I get my shoes on and we go. Well, when I finally put get my shoes on, the girls race towards the front door and Sydney jumps the last 2…

On Sunday, we took Sydney and Addy, and my parents dog Ella, out to Deams Lake.
Deams Lake is a state park on the outskirts of Borden, Indiana. We like to take the dogs up there and get them in the water and play. If you ask Sydney & Addy if they want to go swimming, they freak out with excitement. What was great about this time was even Sydney wanted to get in the water. She was whining and get fussy and…

There is a lot of
discussion on whether animals have personalities. As you can probably guess, I am of the opinion that they
do have personalities. Sydney & Addy could be a case study (if anyone is interested).
Sydney is the Type A personality. She is what I like to call the 'mama' dog. She is that one that makes sure you are okay if you are upset. She is very protective of the house. She loves structure and…

The last couple of blogs have been focused on Sydney. So I need to get you caught up on Addy. Addy is our
yellow lab. Addy was an 'accident' in every sense of the word.

The same co-worker of my husband's, where we got Sydney, sent him an email the February after we got Sydney with a surprise. The co-worker had planned for Sydney's mother to…

Happy Birthday Sydney! As I mentioned in my previous
post, Sydney turned 2 yesterday. It is hard to believe it has been almost 2 years since we first saw her.
I had wanted a dog for a while. I have always loved
labs and my husband was determined I was going to get one.
I fell in love in Sydney from the…

As I noted in my previous
blog, we were trying to get Sydney to not become as anxious as she normally does around fireworks. The vet gave us an
over-the-counter herbal remedy to help calm her down. Sydney weighs approximately 70 pounds and received 10 drops, 3 times a day.
The bottle looked just like eye drops. The vet…

I have had several people comment on how I got the girls to act so well for the photos in the
first blog. Well, it was a small feat and took us about an hour to get a couple of shots. When we first put our 'backdrop' (I use the term loosely). Sydney went and laid right down on it. I am sure she thought it was another blanket she could use!

So…
