I just got a new puppy and I also have a 2 year old border collie. We have had the puppy for about a week. We are having trouble with both dogs. The puppy always wants to play (i.e. bite the older dog in the rear end). Also, our older dog always makes growling and grunting noises when they play, which are really loud. They sound like the older dog is fighting when actually is playing, but it is rather annoying.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to better train/socialize these two dogs? I want them to get a long and play (without having loud noises). Also, any ideas how to get the older to not making crazy growling and grunting noises when playing?

I am desperate

Dear Desperate & Annoyed: These are dogs being dogs apparently getting along. Consider when I was in your position my older dog controlled every aspect of my puppies life with the exception of his breathing. When the older dog passed there was no morning, notta! My remaining dog had a wonderful life and lived happily ever after.

This is very normal for your dogs. The older dog is just letting the pup know that it was there first. The pup is engaging the older dog to play and that is good. You might never get the older one to stop making the loud noises, but keep on telling the both of them to knock it off when it gets to loud. You're are really very lucky that they get along, and that the older dog hasn't tried to hurt your pup shows that they are buddies.I personally own ,breed, and train rottweilers.Even though the dogs are of various ages the young ones always seem to be much bravier than the last. You would have more problems if the older dog never accepted the pupand the fact that it would rather be the dominate one would make your life a nitemare. For now they are just being dogs and that is normal for them.

Don't know about the noises but when we introduce a new dog to the family we go to our local fair grounds . One person brings the dog from home and the other brings the new dog so they meet in a neutral place. They get to know each other there and then go home together. That way one is not intruding on the other. It worked for us.

As a petsitter, I don't petsit in my home. I go to their's for scheduled visits. So Lucy, if you are taking pets into your home, then yes, you would need some type of license or permit. You may even need to look into zoning issues with your home. Al…

They are probably referring to the licence you need from Louisville Metro Animal Control. You need a license for boarding (babysitting is considered the same thing as they are in your care during that time) You do need this as the fines are steep fo…

They might be referring to a business license, which you don't need for a pet sitting business. You might want to join a petsitters group like Petsitters International (www.petsit.com). They usually have a lot of good info for getting your business…
