Walmart has recently added a new kind of cat litter to its Special Kitty store brand: Citrus-Scented. DO NOT BUY THIS LITTER. Cats hate citrus. No, seriously. Cats HATE citrus. In fact, if you have something you want your cats to stay away from, experts recommend you spray it with a lemon or orange scent. Can you imagine your kitty's confusion if you put something that repels him or her in the litterbox? If you've picked this product up recently and your cat has stopped using the box, the new litter would be why. I would suggest running out ASAP (or sooner!) and buying the old litter and a new litterbox, in case any of the scent is clinging to the plastic in the old box, and replacing everything.

We're not familiar with all the litters on the market, so not really commenting about the litter here. However, here's a tip about changing litters. Cats are creatures of habit and most don't care much for change. So, if you want to change your cat's litter, do it gradually. Mix the new litter with the old brand so the cat can become accustomed to the smell and feel of the new product. Slowly increase the percentage of the new litter over a week or two. This will make the transition from one kind of litter to another easier for you and your cat. There’s nothing more distressing for the cat owner than to have a cat suddenly stop using the box!

Thank you for adding those facts - they're excellent ones! Cat owners often aren't aware of the complicated relationship cats have with their litterbox and it is very distressing to suddenly find "presents" (both liquid and solid) around the house. I switched mine from scooping clay litter to a corn-based biodegradable kind over the summer, and even though I did the gradual change-over, one of them was still so upset (and boy, did she make sure I knew it on the day there was way more of the new stuff than the old in the box) that I had to leave one box of the old scooping stuff for her. Also, if a cat suddenly starts going to the litterbox over and over and appearing to strain or try to go to the bathroom, then starts going outside the box, that's a red flag that something is seriously physically wrong. Such behavior often signals a urinary tract infection or a urinary blockage, both of which can be fatal very quickly, or constipation. Get to your vet or an emergency vet as fast as you can.

As for all the litters on the market, there *are* so many of them that it's not really fair to pooh-pooh or hullaballoo one over the other. I just thought a citrus-scented litter was a really, really, really bad idea. Walmart makes several other kinds of litter in their Special Kitty brand (one of which I've used) and as far as I know, they all seem to be fine.

As a petsitter, I don't petsit in my home. I go to their's for scheduled visits. So Lucy, if you are taking pets into your home, then yes, you would need some type of license or permit. You may even need to look into zoning issues with your home. Al…

They might be referring to a business license, which you don't need for a pet sitting business. You might want to join a petsitters group like Petsitters International (www.petsit.com). They usually have a lot of good info for getting your business…
